2017-2018 Season Watch

2017-2018 Season Watch

It is that time of year, therefore I’m starting the 2017-2018 Season Watch.  I will let you know about snow as it happens in Palmyra.  This is to help dispel the myth that we get tons of snow.

Day 1 – November 10th, 2017, Friday – We awoke to a light dusting.  It is my understanding that Marion received a couple of inches.  We simply got dusted.  In fact, everywhere I went today only showed a dusting (Newark, Clifton Springs, Macedon, etc.)

Day 2 – November 13th, 2017, Monday – Another light dusting.

Day 3 – November 19th, 2017, Sunday – It rained most of the day, but we did see some flakes floating around as well as a bit of graupel.  Came evening, some of the snow was sticking to the leaves of the ground cover, but the pavement was wet.

Day 4 – November 20th, 2017, Monday – We woke to a light dusting on the lawn and roof.  Nothing stuck to the sidewalks or pavement.

November 21st was a gorgeous day.  I took advantage of the sunshine and took a walk in the Sacred Grove…

Day 5 – December 7, 2017, Thursday – Another light dusting.  While the flurries seemed to look threatening at times, it never amounted to anything.

Day 6 – December 10, 2017, Sunday – A dusting again, but a little thicker than previous dustings this year.  They say Tuesday is going to be the big snow day.  We’ll see how it turns out.

Day 7 – December 11th, 2017, Monday – I woke to a dusting of snow.  It seems to be melting as fast as it falls.  Now it’s a little after 10 a.m. and the snow is starting to stick to the pavement.  We’ve got about 1″ that’s accumulated on the lawn.

Day 8 – December 12th, 2017

I got up before sunrise to shovel snow.  It wasn’t a lot, maybe 1.5″ since last night, but still I want to keep things clear in case we get more.

Day 9 – December 13th, 2017 – Another 1.5″, but very dry and cold.

Day 10 – December 14th, 2017 – We got about 1″ more last night.

Day 11 – December 21st, 2017 – Woke to a light dusting that melted off quickly

Day 12 – December 22nd, 2017 – Snowed all day. About 4pm I decided to shovel snow. We probably got about 2″, but it’s melting underneath and not accumulating much beyond 2″. Came evening, it started to freeze making it very ice.

Day 13 – December 23rd, 2017 – It started snowing, and quickly changed to rain. It’s been raining ever since. They warn that it will freeze tonight so things can get icy on the roads.  So, if these keeps up, I’m not sure it will be a White Christmas, but it will definitely be a wet Christmas.

I spoke too soon.  Around 4pm I went to the house, and upon opening the front door of the studio (see picture above), discovered a good 2″ more of snow.  The rain has turned to snow.  It might be a White Christmas after all.

I went outside and cleared over 5000 square feet of driveway and sidewalks.  It’s wet and slush and looks like Slurpees coming out of the shoot, but at least I’ll have a head start before church tomorrow.

Day 14 – December 24th, 2017 – Christmas Eve and it is going to be a White Christmas.

Day 15 – December 27th, 2017 – We got about 1″.  Temperatures are dropping!

Day 16 – December 28th, 2017 – Low last night was 7F, high today was about 27F.  We had a few flurries.

Day 17 – December 29th, 2017 – The cold snap continues.  Low last night was 8F.  Highs today will be in the teens they say.  We got a light dusting over night.

Day 18 – December 31st, 2017 – 1″ of snowfall last night, and I have to drive to Toronto tomorrow.  I hope it doesn’t get worse

Day 19 – January 1st, 2018 – Only about a 1/2 today which made the driving to Toronto tolerable.

Day 20 – January 4th, 2018 – 3.5 inches today.  I’m in Israel where it’s chilly, but in the 60s in the day, 40s at night.  Whereas, back in Palmyra it’s in the single digits.

Day 21 – January 5th, 2018 – Another 3″ today that makes for 6″ of accumulation at these low temperatures.  I’m still in Israel

Day 22 – January 6th, 2018 – Just a light dusting today.

Day 23 – January 7th, 2018 – A half inch today.

Day 24 – January 8th, 2018 – Another light dusting, but still very cold.  I’m still in Israel.

Day 25 – January 11th, 2018 – 3″ again today.  I’m back from Israel, and this is the welcome home I get.

Day 26 – January 12th, 2018 – 9.6″ TODAY!!!  This is a near record for January.

Day 27 – January 13th, 2018 – 2″ additional today.

Day 28 – January  14th, 2018 – 1/2″ today.  I’m starting to get sick.

Day 29 – January 15th, 2018 – 1″ today.

Day 30 – January 16th, 2018 – Just a light dusting today.

Day 31 – January 22nd, 2018 – A light dusting, but the high today was in the 50s!!!  The snow is all melted.

Day 32 – January 23rd, 2018 – Another dusting, and the temperatures are dropping.  Bethe and I are both sick.

Day 33 – January 28th, 2018 – About 1/2 inch today.

Day 34 – January 29th, 2018 – 6 1/2 inches today.  People are already exaggerating on Facebook saying it is 2″ deep.  Yeah, where it drifts, but I’m going by the NOAA figures for Palmyra.

Day 35 – January 30th, 2018 – 1/2 today.

Day 36 – January 31st, 2018 – About an inch, maybe a little less.

Day 37 – February 1st, 2018 – Another inch.

Day 38 – February 3rd, 2018 – A heavy dusting

Day 39 – February 4th, 2018 – about 1/2 inch.

Day 40 – February 5th, 2018 – 1″ today, but very cold.

Day 41 – February 6th, 2018 – A little over 4″ today.

Day 42 – February 7th, 2018 – A little less than an inch today.

Day 42 – February 8th, 2018 – 2 1/2 inches today.

Day 43 – February 9th, 2018 – 4″ today.
