Years ago in a San Francisco Chinatown restaurant I saw someone being served a clay pot dish. I asked the waitress where it was on the menu. She said, something to the effect, ‘If you want to try real Chinese food, ask for the Chinese menu next time.’
Basically, a clay pot is a Chinese version of a casserole or stew.
I don’t have a recipe to post, but my first attempt turned out exactly how I thought it should taste. I made a five spice meatball, mixed them with chunks of onion, mushroom, peppers and squash, and baked them in a brown gravy. I served the mixture over steamed rice.
