We had a really good sacrament meeting today. Brother and Sister Lau talked and their talks were centered on the Savior. When you combine that with the full-time elders and sisters singing I Know That My Redeemer Lives, you end up with a great meeting.
While eating breakfast this morning, I was watching an interview with an economist who predicted our economic hard times and he was saying the worse is still to come. He estimates 2013/2014 and the stock market and housing markets will take an even bigger crash. He claims it is inevitable, but in theory, could be corrected. (i.e. People won’t do what it will take to fix the problem.) This left me heading to church feeling a little down. But, while listening to Brother and Sister Lau, I realized the world, as a whole, needs to repent before things will get better.
We’ve embraced evil in this world. Don’t believe me? Just watch some of our TV commercials. I saw one other day that embraced bestiality. The commercial was for candy, of all things. How sick can we get as a society? Watch commercials for these ultimate fights. These are ads that little kids see and they do have an impact on their developing brains.
The Book of Mormon clearly has the formula. If we keep the commandments we will prosper in the land.
I don’t think we are going to hear any politicians preaching this. There are no taxes or government plans that will save us from impending doom unless we, as a people, are living worthy of the blessings.
I remember hearing someone say the 50s and 60s were so wonderful because people, in general, were living righteously. Then, in 1972, a poorly written amendment was passed by congress. Church leaders warned that the bill was not written right, and that we were being sold something that would lead to problems in the future. (Keep in mind, the LDS Church a pioneer in helping women get the right to vote, so it wasn’t they were against so called equal rights. They were against the wording, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Why? Because of the ambiguity of the word “sex” instead of gender.)
On the heals of ERA came Rowe v. Wade. This was a landmark case that changed who, why and how women could seek abortions. In my opinion, this began the fulfilment of prophecy in Matthew 24:12, ‘And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.’ Today on TV shows, a character finds out she’s pregnant, and one of the first questions posed to the character is, “Are you going to keep it?” It is followed by the question, “Do you know who the daddy is?” And, when was the last time you saw a movie where a couple meets, are attracted to each other, and doesn’t sleep together?
I can’t continue writing about this. It’s depressing where we are heading. I fear for my grandchildren and that generation. Read Matthew chapter 24. Denial won’t get us anywhere.
On the brighter side, the more I read the Book of Mormon, the more I realize even though things are getting bad, there is a bright hope. I think 3rd Nephi is a type of the second coming. Among the Nephites, wickedness was abounding. It was to the point where they were about to kill the Christians when the signs were given. I think the period of peace after the Lord appeared at the Temple Bountiful was a type of the millennial reign of Christ.
Like all formulas, there must be a balance. The left must balance the right. So, the question is, which side of the equation do you want to be on?
Here’s the formula:
Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land;
but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence.
-2 Nephi 1:20
