Ask and Ye Shall Receive

I just haven’t known where to turn to get my Palmyra book widely distributed.  I really don’t want to be a publisher and distributor.  I want to be a photographer.  Or, should I say, I am a photographer and I don’t like wearing all these other hats:  publisher, distributor, editor, etc.

Deciding I should ask for help turned me to e-mail Robert Farber.  I figured, if anyone should have an answer, he would.

As Elizabethe and I were driving home from Rochester, my phone rings.  I didn’t recognize the phone number on my caller ID.  When I answered it, I hear, “Hi, this is Robert Farber…”

What a down-right nice man.  I said this after I met him, and I’m saying it again.  Mr. Farber is a genuinely nice guy.  He not only called me in regards to my question, he gave me a really useful answer.

So, publically, I say, “Thank you Robert.”

Of course, I now have to act upon his answer.  I’ve got to do a little research, make some travel plans, and get my ducks in order.

I’ve Got to Ask

I’ve got to ask… Are people stupid?

I know that sounds harsh, but when I read about recalls because people are not using their gray-matter, I really question the average intelligence in this world.

Now, this sort of stuff has been around for a long time.  Denatured alcohol has been used in chafing dishes, camp stoves, and more.  Now, someone bottles it under a different name, and all I can assume is someone who wasn’t quite thinking right, got seriously injured because they forgot the stuff was BURNING.

I will admit I’ve done some stupid things when it comes to flaming matter.  I once forgot a fire was going and tried to lift a grate over the fire.   It left me with some pretty nasty 2nd degree burns on my palms.

The difference is… I didn’t call the manufacture of the fire pit and threaten to sue them because of my stupidity.

We keep reading about these things.   Woman sues over coffee burns.  Man sues over being cut by his chainsaw.  Etc.

Who pays?

Okay… I feel much better now that I’ve gotten that off my chest.   So, we had our evening working in the temple.  I was able to get some work done for a friend who requested my help.  Enrico and Louise were there, as well as many other friends.  The temple is always a nice place to be.

Hugo

For Family Home Evening, Elizabethe and I went from Rochester to Victor after work.  We grabbed a sandwich at Amillia’s, and then headed to the Regal Theatre to meet up with Enrico and Louise.

We watched the movie Hugh (in 3-D).  The 3-D was a nice touch, but the movie was fantastic.

First, it is a family movie.  It might be intense for real little kids, but it is so good.

It is a very visual movie.  The details of the visual aspects are very important to this film.  Every detail has been filmed carefully.  It is not a movie you can snooze through and then know what happened.

There was a point in the movie where Hugo says he used to look out over the City of Paris and think the world was a big machine.  What he said next was very profound.  He said something to the effect, “Machines do not come with extra parts.”

What a message.  Every person on this earth plays a part, and they are not superfluous or unneeded.

So, go see the movie and you’ll see what I mean.

Warm Weather

It seems like unusually warm weather for the end of November.  Although I have a page that tracks snowfall, I haven’t tracked temperatures all that closely.  They say we should expect high 40s at night, and rain through the week.  Sounds like a nice way to start the week.

We have a young man in our ward who is about to depart on his mission to Boise Idaho.  I think he is about to discover that Palmyra weather is much milder that its natives would like you to think.  I find it funny that so many locals complain about the winters here, when they have not experienced Idaho or Utah weather for any amount of time.  I will take Palmyra over Southern Idaho or Northern Utah any time.

A good thing for left-over turkey is Chilaquiles [chee-lah-KEE-lehs].  You simply make a pot of sauce using canned tomatoes, chipped onion, chopped chilis and spices, and you bring it to a boil.  Then, you pour it over a bowl of crushed tortilla chips and shredded cheddar cheese.  Then, you stir it all togehter.  The hot liquid melts the cheese and softens the chips.

That’s exactly what we had when Sisters Carter and Lee came to dinner tonight. I explained to them how to make it and that it is a good missionary meal because it is so quick and easy to prepare.

 

A Shoot with Beverly

A few months back Elizabethe and I were eating at Yellow Mills.  We had this very pretty waitress, Beverly.  Think it a little strange to ask her to model for me, I put Elizabethe up to it.

Months went by and we didn’t hear from her.  Then, a few weeks ago I get an e-mail saying Beverly had lost my e-mail address and recently came across where she had written it down.  She had been away at college and would be coming home for Thanksgiving break.  So, we got together today for a shoot.

After the shoot I had to rush off to the temple.  When I was done there, I rushed back home to pickup  Elizabethe and we went to dinner at Yellow Mills.  We surprised Beverly with a print from the shoot.

They had prime rib for $15.99, so I went for it.  It was quite good.  Nice and rare.  Then, Beverly tells us her brother is the cook.  So, she brought him out and introduced him, Niko.  We chatted for a bit and then headed home.

It was a nice wind-down from the Thanksgiving weekend.

Day After Thanksgiving

I refuse to call it “Black Friday”.  I think that is tacky and a sign we’ve forgotten our history.  Black Friday, September 24th, 1869, the stock market crashed.  To mock history and call a day of shopping “Black Friday”, is a shame.

For me, it was a day like any other day.  Work, fix dinner, do some work around the house, and go to bed.

Now comes Monday, I have no problem with them calling it Cyber Monday.  At least that doesn’t have a tie to a tragic day in history.

Thanksgiving 2011

I thank God everyday for the blessings he has given me.  Even when I’m undeserving of his blessings, he still blesses me.  For that, I am forever grateful.

Of those blessings, my family and friends are at the top of that list.  God has blessed me with a wonderful wife, children and grandchildren as well as an extended family.

I guess it has become a defacto tradition to contact family on this holiday.  I recall back in the 60s gathering around the phone to take turns talking to aunts and uncles and grandparents as they would call.  Today, text messages and cell phone calls filled the day.

We had quite the frost this morning.  I had to break out the camera for some photos.

I spent most of the day cooking and preparing for our small feast.  Enrico and Louise were coming over.  Sveltlana and her daughter were going to join us too.  And, although I was only cooking for 6, we probably had enough to feed 26.

For dinner I prepared the traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean salad, two gravies (smooth and giblet), cranberry sauces, crudities, pumpkin pie and pecan pie.  When it was all on the table I questioned my own sanity.  But, I’m glad we went to all the trouble.

We truly have a lot to be thankful for.  Even with all the turmoil in the world, we are relatively safe from the unrest and troubles that exist elsewhere.  God has made this a promise land for those who seek and serve him, and as long as there are those who continue to do so we have a blessing of prosperity and safety.

As the song says, “God bless America.”

More Dry-pack Canning

After work I had a meeting with a young lady who will be doing some modeling for the studio.  It went well and she’s excited to get started.

After that Elizabethe and I began dry-canning some rice and noodles.  Enrico and Louise joined us and we managed to seal 48 cans.  I think (hope) we’re done.

OH, NO.  After we were all done Elizabethe discovered three boxes of pancake mix that needs to be canned.

I guess we’ll never be quite… done.

24×7 Christmas Music

I love Christmas music.   I’m delighted one of the local radio stations is playing it 24×7 between now and Christmas.  I don’t care for the early commercialization of Christmas with the ads and sales, but I don’t mind the music

Meatloaf Tacos and Monday All Over Again

Technology is great, but it sure makes Mondays a task-filled day of going through new e-mail messages.  I guess it is better than starting the day with a full in-box.  Just think of all the saved trees.

If you are not in the mood for leftover meatloaf, try this.  Break it up and warm it up in the frying pan and add some chili powder, garlic and cumin powder.  Then, use it for taco meat.  Yeah, that was dinner tonight.  Meatloaf tacos.

Here it is, not even Thanksgiving yet, and there is a radio station that is already playing 24×7 Christmas music.  It seems odd to get started this early.  Perhaps it is the sad state of affairs in the world that are causing people to start the Christmas season early.
